The Monterey Bay Area is home to more than 20 higher education and research institutions that had a combined operational budget of over $1.4 billion in 2006. It's also home to five of the country's premiere military educational and research institutions with the first Homeland Security degrees anywhere. Six institutions provide language programs from community college through graduate level making the peninsula the "Language Capital of the World." Eleven institutions of higher education, five wildlife and/or marine related reserves, and seven government agencies contribute to Monterey Bay's extensive research environment.
