The University of California, Santa Cruz, opened in 1965 and grew, one college at a time, to its current (2005-06) enrollment of about 15,000 students. Undergraduates pursue 61 majors supervised by divisional deans of humanities, physical & biological sciences, social sciences, and arts. Graduate students work toward graduate certificates, master's degrees, or doctoral degrees in 32 academic fields under the supervision of the divisional and graduate deans. The dean of the Jack Baskin School of Engineering oversees the campus's undergraduate and graduate engineering programs.
UC Santa Cruz faculty have made significant contributions to the body of research that has earned the University of California the ranking of the foremost public research institution in the world, demonstrating that cutting-edge research and high-quality teaching are mutually supportive.
A study ranked UC Santa Cruz 11th in the nation among public campuses for the quality of its research productivity; in the study, UC Santa Cruz ranked 1st in the assessment of productivity in the Social Sciences and 6th in the Arts and Humanities index. In surveys by the Institute for Scientific Information measuring per-paper impact, UC Santa Cruz ranked 1st in the nation for its research in the field of space sciences and 2nd in the world in the physical sciences.
